Argos is a remarkable example of what a Labrador retriever should be. He is extremely friendly to dogs and people alike and is especially gentle with puppies and young children. Extremely calm and steady, Argos exhudes a mellow confidence in everything he does, whether in work or play. Nothing spooks him and nothing angers him. His tail has only one story to tell -- that it's a wonderous joy to be alive.

Argos comes from sound British lines with eight Champions among four generations in his pedigree. From them, he inherited his big bones, large blocky head, and sweet disposition. Despite his formidable size and powerful appearance, his calmness and kind expression even puts most dog-fearers at ease. Argos has provided registered therapy dog service at the Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo, where he was most beloved by patients and families in the pediatrics clinic.

Wayfield's Young Argos & Duck
Argos earned his Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title at only 7 months of age and completed his first obedience (CD) and rally (RN) titles while still a puppy of 14 months. Argos is now finishing up training for his advanced obedience (CDX and UD), Rally Excellence (RE), Tracking Dog (TD), and his first agility titles. He has already completed half of the four qualifications needed for his Junior Hunting (JH) title and has started training for the Senior Hunting (SH) test. His eagerness to please, great intelligence, and desire to work has allowed his owner/handler -- who had no experience training dogs for competition -- to look good in the show and trial rings. Those qualities have made training a pleasure for him and his grateful human partner.

Although Argos has collected ribbons from the confirmation ring, he still has not won any points toward AKC championship. Unfortunately, only three fox-red Labs in the U.S. have become AKC champions in the past three decades. Most AKC judges are still uncomfortable with this beautiful shade -- even though it was the yellow Lab's original color. This hopefully will change as fox-red Labs are seen more frequently in the show ring. (Read history of fox-reds)

What's In a Name?

Argos appears to be the first dog ever named in ancient literature. Nearly 3000 years ago, the Greek poet Homer represented unending loyalty and faithfullness in describing the reunion of Odysseus, the Greek hero of the Trojan War, with his once-mighty, long-suffering hunting dog.

Argos Recognizes Odysseus
Disguised as Beggar

Then a dog lying there raised its head and pricked up its ears. This was Argos, Odysseus' patient-hearted hunting dog, whom he himself had raised many years ago. But before he could enjoy being with his dog, he left for sacred Troy. In earlier days, young men would take the dog to hunt wild goats, deer, and rabbits, but now, with his master gone, he lay neglected in the piles of dung left there by mules and cattle, heaped up before the doors until Odysseus' servants took it as manure for some large field. Argos lay there, covered in fleas. Then, when he saw Odysseus, who was coming closer, Argos wagged his tail and dropped his ears. But he no longer had the strength to approach his master. Odysseus looked away and brushed aside a tear -- he did so casually to hide it from Eumaeus.

Then he questioned him: "Eumaeus, it's strange this dog is lying here, in the dung. He has a handsome body. I'm not sure if his speed once matched his looks or if he's like those table dogs men have, ones their masters raise and keep for show. Then, swineherd Eumaeus, you answered him and said "Yes, this dog belongs to a man who died somewhere far away. If he had the form and acted as he did when Odysseus left him and went to Troy, you'd quickly see his speed and strength, and then you'd be amazed. No wild animal he chased escaped him in deep thick woods, and he could track a scent. He's in a bad way now. His master's dead in some foreign land, and careless women don't look after him. For when their masters no longer exercise their power, then slaves have no desire to do their proper work. Far-seeing Zeus takes half the value of a man the day he's taken and becomes a slave." This said, Eumaeus went inside the stately palace, going straight into the hall to join the noble suitors. But once he'd seen Odysseus after nineteen years, the dark finality of death at once seized Argos.
-- Homer's Odyssey, Book 17

After more than 20 years of wanderings without a canine companion, I finally found my own way home the day I met the puppy I named Wayfield's Young Argos. For that, I forever will be grateful to his breeder, Pauline and Larry Nehring, and to Linda Quinn, who owns Argie's handsome, sweet-hearted dad, Jacquin's Ruddy Duck of Eire (Rusty).
