for Journalism/Newspaper Series was presented to Bill Allen, Kim Bell, and Andrew Skolnick at a gala event in New York City on Sept. 27, 1999.
Other honorees included actress Susan Sarandon, music legend Quincy Jones, Paul Fireman of Reebok, Ed Bradley, The New Yorker magazine, and PBS' Frontline.
The award ceremony was hosted by Patrick Stewart and Christine Lahti, with Andy Rooney, Jane Pauley, Ruth Friendly, Sister Helen Prejean, and Danny Glover among the presenters.

Published as a special section in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, on Sunday, September 27, 1998, the report was written by Post-Dispatch reporters William Allen and Kim Bell, and Post-Dispatch contributor, Andrew A. Skolnick. Amanda Davis was the project's editor.
This report grew out of an investigation supported by a Rosalynn Carter Fellowship in Mental Health Journalism. The fellowship was established by the Carter Center's Mental Health Program in 1997 to promote accurate reporting in mental health issues.
